Well, I thought I would give the Del Mar Fair 2014 Exhibition of Photography a go this year. From back in the days when I lived in San Diego, many moons ago, I have always wanted to enter. Living 1000 miles away added a bit of a challenge, but no matter, I was determined to throw my hat in the ring this year.

For those of you not familiar, the Del Mar Exhibition of Photography is a tough arena to enter, as far as photo competitions are concerned. The fair itself is and always has been larger than life and runs for a month. The photo competition is one of the largest competitive shows on the west coast and open to anyone, internationally, as long as the entrants are at least 18 years old. This juried competition has two-tiered judging, and there are no guarantees that your entry will even hang. In fact, this year less than one third of the entries were accepted for display.  First, you must submit your photo entries digitally and they are judged online. If they pass muster, you will be given permission to enter those same entries in printed and mounted form for hands-on judging by a panel of judges. At this time the judges will determine if your entry will be allowed to hang, and they also determine placings.

So, without further ado, here are my results…

I presented seven entries for the first tier judging. Six of the seven were approved to move forward to the second tier judging.  All six of those entries were approved for display. From those six, two received honorable mention and one placed. Here you go…

All in all it was a great experience, and the placing just about paid my entry fees! (Did I forget to mention that this fair pays out well for placings, but the entry fees are steep at $18.00 per entry).

I can’t wait for the next fair, and maybe next time I will actually make the long trek to San Diego to beam with pride if my photos “make the wall” again next year.
